Antietam

Today is the final full day of our vacation. Tomorrow morning, we fly back home to California. Today, we have a long and fun-filled day. After checking out of our Altoona, Pennsylvania motel before sunrise, we hit the road and drove south toward the Maryland state line. Our first destination in Maryland is Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland.

Mark and I visited Antietam during our 2009 vacation, so today’s visit was a return visit for the two of us. Today’s visit to Antietam was the first for Fay and Shannon.

We arrived at Antietam National Battlefield several minutes before the visitor center opened at 8:30 AM. When the visitor center opened, we watched a short film about the Battle of Antietam and then we took the self-guided auto tour of the battlefield.

We had only 90 minutes to spend at Antietam this morning, so we didn’t make every stop on the battlefield’s auto tour. We limited our stops to the most famous places on the battlefield: The cornfield, Bloody Lane, and Burnside’s Bridge.

At 10:00 AM, after spending 90 minutes at Antietam, we were back in our car and rolling toward our next destination.
