After starting our day in Bowling Green, Kentucky and rolling through Tennessee for sightseeing in Nashville and Columbia, we finished our day with the final leg of our drive to Huntsville, Alabama.
We arrived in Huntsville at 2 PM and checked into a motel. At 3:15 PM we drove to Joe Davis Stadium, home of the Huntsville Stars of the class AA Southern League, to watch Huntsville host the Mobile BayBears at 4 PM.
Huntsville fell behind early when they surrendered 4 runs in the first inning. They trailed 6-1 when they came to bat in the bottom of the 8th inning. A grand slam in the 8th brought Huntsville back to within 6-5. Huntsville kept the 8th inning rally going by getting 2 more men on base, but the rally died when a runner trying to score the tying run from 3rd on a wild pitch was called out at the plate. The home plate umpire was the only person watching the game that thought the runner was out. The runner was obviously safe, but he was called out and the 8th inning ended with Huntsville still trailing, 6-5.
Mobile tacked on 2 insurance runs in the 9th to stretch their lead to 8-5. Huntsville rallied again and got those 2 runs back in their half of the 9th but they fell 1 run short. The final score was Mobile 8, Huntsville 7. Box Score
It was an excellent ballgame and I enjoyed it, but I would have enjoyed it much more in a comfortable stadium. A baseball fanatic like me would attend games here every year because the baseball is good, but casual fans will avoid this old worn-out stadium. If Huntsville doesn’t build a new ballpark soon then I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team pack up and move to a new home elsewhere in the south.
Yes, they did play “Sweet Home Alabama” between innings. We were expecting that, of course.
