This morning I enjoyed an 8 mile skating session on the Iron Horse Trail in San Ramon and Dublin. At sunrise I drove to Central Park in San Ramon and from there I skated south for 4 miles on the Iron Horse Trail into Dublin. When I reached the trail’s intersection with Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin, I turned around and skated over the same 4 miles of trail to return to my starting point.
The 4 mile section of trail that I chose to skate on today has only 3 intersections with city streets, and the trail is very smooth, fairly flat, and straight. That makes an excellent 4 mile stretch of asphalt for working on your forward stride as you skate.
I felt great for the first 6 miles and then I suddenly ran out of gas with 2 miles left to skate. I resisted the temptation to take a rest on one of the trail’s benches, and I slogged my way through the final 2 miles without stopping.
There are lot of pedestrians and bicyclists on the Iron Horse Trail, but you don’t see many inline skaters – and gray haired inline skaters are especially rare. People on the trail were looking at me as if I was crazy.
