Pleasant Hill To Dublin

I had another bike ride with my brother Mark on Saturday. At 5:45 AM our bikes were racked on my car and we drove to the Castro Valley BART station, where we caught a train to Pleasant Hill. At 7:15 AM, after 2 BART line transfers, we arrived at the Pleasant Hill BART station where we joined the Iron Horse Trail. The trail is just one short block away from the Pleasant Hill BART station.

We had a fantastic ride south on the Iron Horse Trail from Pleasant Hill through Walnut Creek, Alamo, Danville, and San Ramon.

Unfortunately, in San Ramon, about 4 miles from the end of our ride, my rear tire went flat. The tire was beyond immediate repair, so we walked our bikes on the trail for 3 miles to the Dublin Cyclery for repairs. I tried to convince Mark to ride ahead without me, but he insisted on walking with me. It was a warm and sunny morning for a 3 mile walk with our bikes, and my face now has a deep sunburn to prove it.

While Dublin Cyclery spent 30 minutes repairing my bike, Mark and I went next door to Athens Burger for lunch and much needed beverages. Dublin Cyclery did a great job on my bike and soon Mark and I were rolling on the trail again.

Our bike riding distance for the day was 17.3 miles. Our bike walking distance was 3.1 miles. We were back at my home in Castro Valley at approximately 2 PM. If my tire hadn’t gone flat we would have been home 2 or 3 hours earlier.

I learned a hard lesson during the day’s ride. Obviously, I need to bring a better tool set and a spare tube with me on these bike rides. I need to improve my ability to fix minor issues with my bike so I’m not stuck walking my bike for miles to a repair shop. I plan to watch numerous YouTube clips about bike repair basics, and I’m considering paying a local bike shop for repair lessons.
