My brother Mark and I visited our father at his assisted living residence this afternoon. This was the first time that we’d seen our father in 2 months because the assisted living facility shut down visits in late August when one of the residents tested positive for COVID-19. Now that every resident and every employee has tested negative several consecutive times, we are permitted to visit again.

All visits must occur outdoors on the facility’s courtyard, with masks and social distancing required. Visits are limited to 2 family members at a time, and the visits cannot last more than 1 hour. Dad enjoys sitting in the breezy sunshine but he can’t do it for long periods, so the 1 hour limitation is not a problem for us. Dad gets tired pretty easily, which isn’t surprising for a man that’s a few months shy of his 90th birthday.
