The Thirty Years War

I’m almost finished reading ‘The Thirty Years War’ by Peter H. Wilson. The Thirty Years War was fought in Middle Europe from 1618 to 1648. It has been called the last and greatest of Europe’s religious wars, but that doesn’t mean that religion didn’t play a part in subsequent wars.

Two major themes during the 30 years of mayhem were the control of Middle Europe, which we would now call Germany, and the continuous conflict between Protestants and Catholics. Wilson’s book digs into these matters, and more, in great detail.

If you’re looking for a simple and casual explanation of this war, you should look elsewhere. If you’re interested in a detailed account of the political, religious, military, and social events that shaped the Thirty Years War, I strongly recommend this book.
